Country Park Maintenance Volunteer

Role description:

This is an exciting role for people who love nature, being out and about in the fresh air and taking part in practical activities. You’ll meet an incredible variety of people, have the chance to learn new skills, work as a team, and spend time in the wonderful Country Parks within Staffordshire. You will be an ambassador for Staffordshire’s Country Parks, share your love and knowledge of the area, inspiring local people and visitors alike.

The type of tasks you may be involved in can include:

  • Practical tasks that help maintain the fabric and infrastructure of the Country Parks such as
    • Installing steps
    • Repairing paths
    • Installing and fixing fencing.
  • Habitat management- working to balance the needs of the people and the wildlife on the Country Parks
    • Woodland management e.g. Felling small branches with hand tools, moving cut timber
    • Heathland management – e.g. Small tree/ bush removal, 
    • Grassland management- e.g. strimming and mowing
    • Pond management.
  • Reporting of issues back to The Countryside Officers.
  • Inspections of site infrastructure, such as benches and paths.
  • You will also be able to help with educating members of the public about the management of these beautiful Country Parks and how the public can also help in maintaining the parks whilst enjoying their visit
  • The role will involve working outdoors on various terrains in a variety of weather conditions, lifting heavy items and standing for a long period of time.

The essential requirements of the role are to:

  • A reasonable level of physical fitness 
  • Represent Staffordshire Country Council in a positive manner.
  • Have the ability to work in an unbiased and diplomatic manner. 
  • Have a friendly and positive attitude with good communication skills. 
  • Be able to follow instruction. 
  • Be able to read a map. 
  • Have a love for the countryside
  • Be aware that whilst working as a volunteer, all the health and safety precautions and legislation, that protect and govern full-time members of staff, apply to you. This means that we have a responsibility for your health and safety while you are volunteering by ensuring that you:
    • Attend the SCC volunteer safety training course. 
    • Agree to wear suitable clothing and footwear for the required task. 
    • Follow the risk assessments associated with your role.

What we will provide:

  • An initial induction and training.
  • Help and guidance with any queries.
  • Cover by our insurance policy whilst carrying out arranged works with this scheme.
  • Supplied with work gloves 
  • Loan of further PPE such as steel toe capped wellies, eye and head protection etc. as required by the task.
