Guidance and support for Ukraine residents thinking of moving to Staffordshire

Homes for Ukraine scheme

Launched by the UK Government in March 2022, this scheme allows UK residents to sponsor named individuals or families from Ukraine to live with them.

Council responsibilities include:

  • Carrying out safeguarding checks on sponsors and accommodation
  • Arranging interim payments for guests
  • Managing thank you payments for sponsors
  • Helping guests settle into life in Staffordshire

Ukraine permission extension (UPE)

The UPE scheme continues to offer temporary sanctuary to Ukrainians and their eligible family members providing up to 18 months permission to remain in the UK. 

The scheme opened for applications on 4 February 2025. Further information about eligibility and entitlements can be found in Home Office guidance: Applying to the Ukraine Permission Extension scheme.

Sponsors will continue to receive thank you payments until the end of the guest’s visa extension.

Support and grants

Community groups helping Ukrainian guests can apply for grants of up to £10,000 through the Community Foundation for Staffordshire.
Eligible projects include:

  • ESOL (English language) support
  • Health and wellbeing activities
  • Employment and training support

The grant scheme is open now and ends on 16 March 2026.
