Respite care and carer breaks

What respite is, who can get it, how to apply, and the support available for carers

Costs, financial help and services

You may be able to get financial support to help with respite care.

Direct payments:

  • Carer’s Direct Payment: A one-off payment to support your wellbeing.
  • Replacement Care Direct Payment: Helps pay for care while your usual carer takes a break.
    • Can be used for care in your home or for a short stay in a care home.
    • Cannot be used for holidays or general travel costs such as hotels or meals.

Charges:

  • If you already pay towards care, you will not pay extra for respite.
  • If not, you will have a financial assessment.
  • Self-funders who ask the council to arrange care will pay an arrangement fee.
