The Chairman of the County Council

The Chairman is elected by the whole county council to chair and control the proceedings of full council meetings in a non-political, fair and neutral manner, ultimately having the 'casting vote' on the decisions made.

All full council meetings are webcast and can be watched online

What does the Chairman do?

  • Hosts receptions, afternoon teas and celebration evenings to show the county's appreciation for services given to the people of the county by communities, volunteers, groups and individuals.

  • Promotes the objectives and services of the county council and Staffordshire itself.

  • Supports the core values with the council's Strategic Plan 2022 to 2026.

The current Chairman and Vice-Chairman were elected on 22 May 2025.

Chairman – Paul Williams

Paul Williams

Paul was born in Wolverhampton and for most of his life has lived in different parts of Staffordshire, settling in Stafford itself in 2011. He has been self employed most of his working life in various High Street enterprises. Notably having one of the first Pizza delivery outlets in the country way back in 1989.

He was thrilled to be elected as County Councillor in 2025 and as Chairman he is determined to ensure that Staffordshire remains and improves as a great place to live.

A season ticket holder at Wolves and an enthusiastic follower of Japanese Summo wrestling, he is also a keen motorcyclist.

His partner Helen Arnold will be his consort who also is a County Councillor. Helen worked for Staffordshire County Council as a HR Consultant for over 100 schools for over 30 years.

They enjoy gardening and travelling abroad experiencing different cultures. They are doting grandparents to 7 soon to be 8 grandchildren.

Vice Chairman – Gordon Munro Gordon Munro

 

Born in Kongwa, Tanzania, Gordon Munro’s journey has been one of dedication, resilience, and service. His parents met while serving in the Colonial Service, and he later pursued his education at Dingwall Academy in Ross Shire, Scotland. Gordon's career has been shaped by his commitment to service, innovation, and leadership. Specialising in avionics during his time in the military and commando forces, he served across Germany, Northern Ireland, Norway, and in the Falklands Conflict, an experience that instilled discipline, adaptability, and perseverance.

Following his military career, Gordon transitioned into technology, earning a Diploma in Computer Engineering and later an HND in Computer Studies. His expertise led him into Data Networking and Communications, where he played a key role in building and growing several businesses. His passion for education saw him teaching apprentices at the Atomic Weapons Establishment in Aldermaston, shaping the next generation of skilled professionals.

In 2006, Gordon moved his family back to Inverness to be closer to his parents during their later years. He then founded his own business in IT, Computers, Wi-Fi, and CCTV, which he successfully grew and sold in 2022.

Beyond his professional achievements, Gordon has always championed community engagement. As Chairman of his local Round Table, he led fundraising initiatives to support his community in meaningful ways. His passion for sports also drove him to become a Basketball Coach and Referee, where he founded the Alford Lions Basketball Club, fostering young talent and teamwork.

Gordon’s wife, Nicola, is his Consort and a dedicated NHS Nurse, supporting SEND children. Together, they have three children, two of whom live in Tamworth with their four grandchildren. With deep family roots in the area, Gordon is committed to making a tangible difference in the community for future generations.
