A structural engineer whose business operates globally from its Staffordshire base has been given a vital helping hand from a county council support programme.

Bogdan Statkevych moved from his native Ukraine to be closer to family last year – and with 25 years’ experience in structural engineering and steel fabrication is now operating a successful consultancy business, with key clients operating as far away as California in the USA.

Previously Bogdan worked on a freelance basis for corporate leaders in the sector and decided to rise to the challenge of setting up his own business. To do this, he needed support and guidance on the UK tax system and business regulations, which is when he turned to Staffordshire County Council’s Get Started and Grow programme.

Get Started and Grow provides free expert advice and guidance to businesses up to five years old on legal and financial advice including tax and accountancy to marketing.

Businesses can find out more on the Get Started and Grow webpage.

Bogdan said:

The main challenges in starting the business were understanding the UK tax system and bookkeeping requirements as a new sole trader. I also needed to adapt to different accounting rules compared to Ukraine and to manage cross-border payments for export services.

Through the Get Started & Grow programme, I received accountancy support for my business. The consultations were particularly helpful in and the guidance I received was extremely valuable in helping me manage my accounts correctly and operate with confidence.

The whole process was clear and well-organised, with straightforward communication at every stage. The council team was professional and supportive, and the advice I received was practical and easy to apply in real business situations. I would definitely recommend Get Started & Grow to anyone who is starting or developing a new business in Staffordshire.”

Staffordshire County Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for economy and skills Martin Murray said:

It’s fantastic that Bogdan has started his business here and clearly values all we have to offer at the county council and in Staffordshire as a place to do business at the beating heart of the UK economy.

We’re pleased that our Get Started and Grow programme has enabled a skilled entrepreneur to get the advice and guidance he needed to establish the business and focus on his expertise to ensure it is successful and expands its client base.

The programme offers free expert guidance on vital business needs from finance and regulation to marketing. This will strengthen the commitment and hard work of ambitious new businesses like Bogdan’s and we wish him every success in the future.”

Bogdan added:

Staffordshire is a great place to run a business. Its central location makes it convenient for travel and communication, and it is significantly more affordable than larger cities. It is a comfortable and practical place where a small business can grow steadily without unnecessary costs or pressure.”

Bogdan’s business focuses on structural steel detailing and drafting for fabrication companies, providing high-quality technical drawings and coordination support for manufacturing and construction.

The business operates from Staffordshire using innovative remote management using digital and cloud-based innovation, enabling real-time coordination between international teams and clients.
