Michelle calls the INTO programme an "amazing journey."
A volunteer on a project encouraging more people to cycle and walk is urging others to join the scheme.
Michelle Fahey, a volunteer with INTO (Inspiring New Travel Options), has praised the county council-run scheme helping people to stay active.
The Newcastle-based programme hosts a variety of free activities with the aim of improving people’s health and wellbeing, including walks, bike rides and training tailored to each participant’s needs.
And, in September, INTO will launch a new 6-week beginner cycling course, e-bike rides, and a wellbeing-focused cycling programme.
Michelle first joined the INTO scheme to improve her fitness and wellbeing. Through regular participation in activities like the weekly three-mile walk around Silverdale Country Park’s Lake, Michelle found herself connecting with others, gaining confidence, and eventually stepping up to lead the walk with another resident.
Michelle said:
“Volunteering with INTO has been an amazing journey for me. Since joining, my confidence has shot up and I have connected with some incredible people.
“There are so many great activities, from the Silverdale walk to the bike rides from Apedale to Keele. The cycling is a challenge, but the support you have on the journey and the laughs with the group makes the hard work worth it.
“Thanks to all the walking and cycling, my health is thriving, I have lower blood pressure and just feel good far more often than I used to. Whether you’re facing health challenges or just want to get out into nature more, I would definitely recommend that you come along to one of INTO's activities and give it a try."
Andrew Mynors, Cabinet Member for Connectivity at Staffordshire County Council, said:
“This is a fantastic initiative and exactly the kind of thing that can encourage people to lead more active lives.
“The INTO scheme offers more than fitness – it gives residents the chance to enjoy nature, build confidence and meet new people.
“I’d encourage people in Newcastle to join Michelle or a member of the INTO team for a walk or a cycle.”
