Wodehouse Lane Bridge

An 18th century Grade II Listed road bridge in South Staffordshire will undergo a £350,000 refurbishment and repair programme from next week.

The four-week scheme at Wodehouse Lane Bridge, Gospel End, near Wombourne starts this Monday 21 July.

Work on the masonry arch bridge will improve and protect the structure for future years. It will include bridge deck and utility investigations, brickwork repairs and clearing drainage. There will be a second phase of the refurbishment programme in 2026.

For work to take place safely and as quickly as possible, a full closure of the bridge will be needed until Friday 15 August. A signed diversion will be in place along the A463, A459, A4039 and A449.

People can find more information on the scheme webpage.

Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for strategic highways said:

Wodehouse Lane Bridge is a historical asset to Staffordshire and so this refurbishment scheme needs to be carried out in keeping with its Grade II Listed status.

It is the first phase of the scheme ahead of further refurbishment works to take place in 2026 and has been scheduled during the school summer break so we can minimise disruption. Unfortunately a full closure is needed due to the size of the bridge and the nature of works so we’d like to thank people for their patience and understanding.

Completion of both phases of the programme will help to preserve the bridge for years to come.”
