School place planning in Tamworth Borough

A two-tier education system, with primary (4-11 years) and secondary (11-18 years) schools, operates throughout the Tamworth borough.

For the purpose of school place planning across the Tamworth district, schools are grouped together into smaller planning areas which are used to plan the number of school places required. Schools have been grouped together based on the geographical location of schools, and by assessing pupil movement between schools and catchment areas.

As of September 2019 Tamworth, has 26 primary schools, 3 infant schools, 2 junior schools, 5 secondary schools and 1 sixth form centre.

There are currently proposals to open a new primary school in Tamworth within the next five years. The new school is expected to open in September 2021 and will provide 30 additional places in reception each academic year from opening and an additional 90 places in the next five years, up to and including 2023/24.

There is a proposed expansion at Coton Green Primary School which will deliver a further 105 primary school places in the next five years, up to and including 2023/24.

A proposed expansion at The Rawlett School - An AET Academy - will mean that 60 additional places will be available in year 7 each year from September 2020. An additional 240 secondary school places will therefore be available in five years time, up to and including 2023/24.

In the longer term additional school places may be required.

New schools

Within the borough a new primary school is proposed to be delivered within the next five years:

Tamworth: Anker Valley - Primary

A 1FE (210 place) primary school opening in September 2021.

Further primary schools are expected to be delivered on residential development sites at Tamworth Golf Course, Dunstall Farm and Arkall Farm beyond the next five years.

School expansions

In addition to new schools the following expansion projects are currently proposed for the next five years:

The Rawlett School - an AET Academy

Following a successful public consultation in late 2018, a project to increase capacity by 300 places was presented to Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet for approval in early 2019.

The expansion project will include four additional classrooms, two ICT-rich rooms, expanded dining facilities, an additional science room and the refurbishment of other existing spaces.

The project is necessary to provide additional places required as a result of new housing in the school’s catchment area and is expected to be completed for September 2020.

Coton Green Primary School

The Governing Body undertook a consultation process to seek views of the local community on a proposed expansion of the school to provide an additional 105 places, an increase of 15 Reception places each Academic Year, from September 2021. The consultation ended at 4.00pm on Friday 14 February.

The Governing Body met on Monday 24 February 2020 and it was agreed that the proposal to expand Coton Green Primary School was approved in principle.

Coton Green Primary School is due to convert to academy status shortly, once this has occurred, the academy trust must submit a formal application to the Regional Schools Commissioner (RSC). Assuming RSC approval, the academy will start to admit additional Reception pupils from September 2021.
