School place planning in Tamworth Borough

A two-tier education system, with primary (4-11 years) and secondary (11-18 years) schools, operates throughout the Tamworth borough.

For the purpose of school place planning across the Tamworth borough, schools are grouped together into smaller planning areas which are used to plan the number of school places required. Schools have been grouped together based on the geographical location of schools, and by assessing pupil movement between schools and catchment areas.

As of September 2020, Tamworth, has 26 primary schools, 3 infant schools, 2 junior schools, 5 secondary schools & 1 sixth form centre.

There are currently proposals to open a new primary school in Tamworth on the Anker Valley development site within the next five years. The new school is due to open in September 2021 and will provide 30 additional places in reception each academic year from opening and an additional 120 places in the next five years (up to and including 2024/25).

There is a proposed expansion at Coton Green Primary School which will deliver a further 105 primary school places in the next five years (up to and including 2024/25).

There is an expansion project currently being completed at The Rawlett School – An AET Academy meaning that 60 additional places will be available in year 7 each year from September 2021. An additional 300 secondary school places will therefore be available in five years time (up to and including 2024/25).

In the longer term additional primary and secondary school places may be required.

School expansions

In addition to new schools the following expansion projects are currently proposed for the next five years:

The Rawlett School - an AET Academy

The expansion project is currently under construction and when complete will provide four additional classrooms, two ICT-rich rooms, expanded dining facilities, an additional science room and the refurbishment of other existing spaces. The project is necessary to provide additional places required as a result of new housing in the school’s catchment area and is expected to be completed by September 2021.

Coton Green Primary School

Following a successful public consultation in January 2020, a project to increase capacity by 105 places at Coton Green Primary School was presented to Helen Riley (Director for Families and Communities’) who took a delegate decision to approve.

The Department for Education approved the expansion project in November 2020 through the significant change process.

The expansion project will comprise of both new build construction and re-modelling of existing facilities to provide 105 additional places from reception to year 6 (15 places per year group). The proposed completion date for this project is September 2021.
