ESOL: Introduction to Becoming A teaching Assistant (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

Are you thinking about working in a school, but feel unsure about your English? Our ESOL Introduction to Working as a Teaching Assistant course is a great first step.

Who is this course aimed at?

This short, friendly course is specially designed for Staffordshire residents aged 19 +  whose first language is not English and who want to explore what it’s like to work in a UK classroom.

Entry Requirements

You do not need any experience working in schools, just a willingness to learn and improve your English. Before you start the course, we will invite to attend a welcome event to ensure your level of English is appropriate for the course.

Course Content

You’ll learn about the role of a Teaching Assistant, daily responsibilities, classroom routines, and the personal qualities schools look for, such as patience, teamwork and good communication. You’ll also practise using key vocabulary and phrases you might hear in a school, including giving instructions and supporting children. It’s the perfect place to begin your journey towards a rewarding career in education.

Learning Methods

You will be taught face to face  by a friendly and experienced assessor

Learner Support

Classes are small to ensure your teacher can provide you with the help and support you need to enable you to confidently access the class learning materials. Individual specific needs will be discuss at the start of the course. 

Course Assessments

There are no formal assessments, just supportive learning and activities in class. You will work through an individual learning plan and receive regular feedback from your tutor.

Learning Materials

We will provide the workbooks. You will need to bring a pen and paper to take notes and to be able to complete the workbooks during the course.

What can learners do next/progress onto?

After this course, you may choose to join an ESOL to build your English skills further and gain a qualification in speaking, listening, reading and writing and/or progress to a Level 1 or 2 Teaching Assistant course
