Aims of course

For Staffordshire residents aged 19+ (excluding Stoke-on-Trent). Ideal for those looking to build confidence, improve everyday English, or develop skills to support learning, daily life, or future employment.

Entry requirements

No prior knowledge is needed, but an interest in improving your English and literacy skills is an advantage. Learners must be willing to commit to all sessions, work towards individual learning aims, and complete a learner journal. Learning support is available throughout the course if required.

Course content

Brush up your English skills and revisit key written forms that you use everyday and enjoy writing creatively. From writing the perfect letter of complaint to get results, to covering letters for job applications to advertising your second hand goods on Ebay! All mixed in with fun word games to improve your word power and quizzes. Enjoy countryside walks to write a weekly journal of your time with us.

How you will learn?

You will learn through a mix of group discussions, fun word games, creative writing tasks, and real-life activities like reading signs or writing letters. Ann uses pop quizzes and interactive tasks to reinforce learning in a relaxed, supportive environment.

Learner support

Learning support is available throughout the course to meet individual needs. This may include the use of a scribe, a reading pen, a tablet device, or help from someone to build confidence and provide guidance. Support includes practical demonstrations, group activities, completing handouts, and keeping a weekly journal. Where possible, we also assist with travel to and from the course if required.

Course assessments

You will be assessed through regular activities such as quizzes, practical tasks, and participation in group work. You will complete handouts and a weekly journal to reflect on your progress. Assessment focuses on your improvement and effort rather than formal tests, helping you build confidence and develop skills at your own pace.

Learning materials

All materials, such as notebooks, pens, pencils and a journal folder will be provided. You may  wish to bring reading glasses if needed.  Just bring a positive attitude and a willingness to learn!

What can learners progress onto next?

You can progress to courses such as Wonderful Woodwork and Tree Science, Learning with Nature in the Community, or choose to upskill in English and Maths with the Maths Made Easy course, or further support your wellbeing with the DIY and Crafting course.
