Get Ready: Cooking in the Community

Cook a light lunch for a visiting local community group while learning batch cooking, meal prep, recipe ideas, and how to cook on a budget. Share dishes, take some home. Ideal for learners who enjoy hands-on learning and giving back to the community.

Aims of course

This course is aimed at individuals and family members who want to develop practical cooking skills. It focuses on adapting recipes, cooking on a budget, and preparing meals to enjoy at home or share with family. Learners will gain confidence to teach these skills to others. The course also supports community spirit by preparing a light lunch for a group of gardening volunteers, fostering connection and giving back to the neighbourhood.

Entry requirements 

No prior training is needed to join this course. It is perfect for anyone keen to learn practical cooking skills, explore meal planning and budgeting, and enjoy working with others while giving back to the community. Everyone is welcome to take part and grow their confidence in a friendly, supportive environment.

Course content

You will learn practical skills in nature-based activities such as planting, habitat restoration, and wildlife monitoring. The course covers environmental awareness, teamwork, and community engagement. You will develop confidence, communication, and problem-solving skills while contributing to local green spaces and working alongside community groups.

How you will learn?

You will learn through hands-on cooking sessions, group discussions, and practical activities focused on meal planning and budgeting. A key part of the course is working together to prepare a light lunch for a local community group, fostering teamwork and a sense of giving back. This collaborative approach helps build skills, confidence, and connections within the community.

Course assessments

You will be assessed through practical activities, tutor observations, and participation in group discussions. You will also complete short handouts and quizzes to demonstrate your understanding. Regular feedback will be provided to help you track your progress and build confidence throughout the course.

Learning materials

All ingredients will be provided for the cookery sessions. Please wear clothing that allows you to roll up your sleeves past the elbow. Long hair should be tied back, and beards covered with a mask or beard net. If you use glasses for reading or any learning aids, please bring them with you. Remember to bring a packed lunch for the first day.
