Support for mainstream schools using Restrictive Physical Intervention (RPI)

The Educational Psychology Service (EPS) is able to offer support to schools in cases where RPI is used to support young people for safety.

EPs who are able to offer support for RPI are those who are trained as PROACT-SCIPr-UK® Instructors.

Schools are required to make a formal application; the following information will be required electronically.

  • A brief account of the current situation including what proactive steps have already been put in place;

  • a list of incidents of challenging behaviour in the last term;

  • a completed risk assessment. Ideally this will be on the county’s form HS57. This available on the Health and Safety section of the intranet; and

  • completed incident records for all incidents in the last term in which physical intervention has actually been used. Again we would prefer the county’s form HS56 which is available in the same section of the intranet.

This information should be sent to:  julia.rudolf@staffordshire.gov.uk

If the evidence provided by schools clearly identified a need for support with RPI then Julia Rudolf will allocate an EP, if there is capacity within the service.

All EPs are still able to offer the RPI Awareness Raising Training for schools from traded time. Other schools are able to buy the training from the EPS an can email as above to enquire.  If a case is agreed for individual involvement, then the EP allocated can also offer the training if necessary.
