The driver and passenger assistant responsibilities

The driver, and passenger assistant if one is provided, have the responsibility to -

  • Transport your child between the home or designated pick-up point and school, safely and in time to start the school day.
  • Be consistent - regular staff should be used where possible.
  • Wear an identification badge to confirm they have been DBS checked to an enhanced level and completed Safeguarding training.
  • Look after the welfare of the children though be aware that it is not the passenger assistant’s or driver's role to administer routine medication or carry out routine medical procedures for any child in their care.
  • Provide you with a contact number for use in relation to the operation of the contract.
  • Report incidents, accidents and concerns about the children's welfare or behaviour as appropriate.
  • Treat information provided to them with confidence.
  • Be friendly, professional and give notice of planned changes.
  • Ensure the safe operation of the vehicle. Driver needs to consider factors such as road conditions, pupil behaviour and safe transportation of wheelchairs.
