Driving to School - Park & Stride

There are many reasons that parents/carers need to drive a child to school. Data shows that 40% of parents are currently driving to school, some are car sharing and some parking away from the school site. There are daily issues causing concern at many school locations, such as congestion, road safety and inconsiderate parking. We need your help to keep the school entrance and immediate vicinity clear of these problems.

We are urging you to plan the journey to allow time and know the area to park away from the school and use active travel for the final part of the journey. If your school has an official park and stride location set up with a local community group, church, pub, car park etc this will be included in school information maps and action plans. We encourage you to use these.

If your school does not have an official park and stride plan use the journey planners and maps to choose a safe place to park away from the school.

Do’s and Don’ts:

  • Keep the zig zags and double yellows clear - Parking against the Highway Code, for example on yellow zigzags or no parking areas, is monitored by the parking enforcement teams.
  • Parking on the pavements can cause problems for parents with prams and small children, the elderly and general pavement congestion.
  • Don’t block access for residents, leave your engines running or arrive too early in the afternoon to collect pupils from school.
  • Don't block access for emergancy vehicles.

Do you own a site near to a school that could be turned into a park and stride?
