Geography

Why geography matters

Geography is a key part of how we collect, organise, and understand data. It provides the structure that helps us make sense of information. Almost all data must link to a place or area so that we can explore patterns, compare locations, and understand what is happening in our communities.

Because of this, geography is a vital part of the evidence we use in Staffordshire. It helps local decision-makers understand local needs and take action to improve outcomes for residents.

The boundaries we use in Staffordshire

To understand our data and research, it helps to know the different geographical areas we refer to. Many of these are part of a national hierarchy used across England:

  • England (Country)
  • West Midlands (Region)
  • Staffordshire (County)
  • Districts
  • Electoral Wards

For some topics, we use more detailed national or local areas. These help us look more closely at smaller communities:

  • Output Area (OA) – small areas designed for reporting Census data
  • Lower Super Output Areas (LSOA) – made up of several OAs and designed for reporting statistics
  • Middle Super Output Areas (MSOA) – larger areas made up of several LSOAs
  • County Electoral Divisions – areas represented by county councillors
  • Parishes – local community areas with their own councils, in some parts of Staffordshire
