Who is the course aimed at?

This course is for people who want to get more involved in their community. It is also a good first step if you would like to start volunteering.

During the course, you will build your confidence in maths, English and digital skills. These skills can help you at home, at work or when looking for new opportunities.

You will also learn practical skills. These include:

  • simple gardening techniques
  • basic woodwork
  • how to support local community projects
  • how to help or teach other people

You will use a local community venue to practise your skills. This space will also be open for residents to visit and enjoy.

At the end of the course, we will help you find your next steps. This may include:

  • moving into a volunteering role
  • joining more volunteering training
  • being linked with other organisations in Staffordshire

Entry Requirements 

Staffordshire residents aged 19+ who would like to support their wellbeing, are experiencing or recovering from mental ill health or people who are unemployed and would like to re-engage with learning. 

Course Content

Seasonal learning activities aimed at people who would like to be more active in their own community and progress into volunteering.

Learning Methods

Practical tasks, discussion, shared reading and individual learning plans that track personal development and progress.

Learning Support

Learners will have an initial assessment via a phone call or face to face meeting as an introduction to the course and to establish needs.

Course Assessments

Informal assessment which involves discussions with the learner and completion of individual learner records.

Learning Materials

All materials are supplied.

What can learner’s do next/progress onto?

Learners can progress onto STEM courses, volunteering, further learning or employment.

Are there any fees?

This course is fully funded, so there are no course fees.
