How community learning transformed one womans life

Mags NEWSROOM

Mags, from Stafford, was looking for a way to rebuild her self-esteem and connect with others.

Two years ago, her counsellor referred her to the Chase Aqua Rural Enterprises (CARE) programme, which provides community mental health and wellbeing support for vulnerable adults aged 19 and over.

This offered Mags the safe and welcoming space she needed.

Mags said:

“I thought, I don't know if I'm going to be able to do this. Meeting up with people – that was the scary bit. I was very nervous of new places, new people and what they would think of me.”

CARE, which is based at a peaceful countryside farm setting in Penkridge, helps people to build their confidence, self-esteem and social skills through practical activities that fuel positive and sustainable life changes.

Over the course of two years, Mags took part in a range of activities including gardening, woodwork, digital skills and art. These experiences proved instrumental in helping her to build her confidence, develop new skills, feel more connected to her community and to start volunteering at a local group.

Mags added:

“The best thing about being at CARE is that you feel safe, and everybody is so welcoming. I think I've got more confident in being with others and in myself.

“The hardest thing is asking for help. Before, I was very withdrawn and felt that my opinion didn’t matter. It’s given me that confidence back again. Believe in yourself and you can do it.”

Staffordshire’s Community Learning Service works with a range of partners to deliver free learning programmes both online and in-person.

There are courses on offer that are practical based, such as Art for Wellbeing, Maths Made Easy and Office IT Skills; there are also courses that focus on creativity such as DIY and Crafting Skills for Wellbeing.

Martin Murray, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economy and Skills at Staffordshire County Council, said:

“Stories like Mags’ remind us of the life-changing impact that community learning can have.

“Whether it’s learning how to use a computer, improving wellbeing through crafts or simply finding a sense of belonging and making new friends, our courses have something for everyone.”
