Short term fostering

Helps prepare children to return to their own family, to an adoptive family or long term foster carers, or helping older children to get ready for living independently

Short break fostering

Thinking of fostering but can't commit to it full-time?

We need local people who can foster children for a few days during the week, just at weekends or in any of the school holidays. It's a great opportunity to start your fostering career but without the long-term commitment.

What is short break fostering?

Short break fostering (sometimes referred to as respite fostering) is a type of fostering for children and young people who either live with foster carers or are still living at home.

There are different types of short break foster care. You can offer regular short stays for the same child or one off stays for different children. Stays can last for a couple nights up to 2 weeks depending on what is needed. The short break can be an overnight stay during the week, weekend or some times just during the day. It provides both the child and their parent or foster carer with a break from their normal routine.

Are short break foster carers paid?

Foster carers who provide short break foster care are paid pro-rata for each day of their time, therefore one-seventh of the appropriate weekly fee for any complete or part day of care they provide for a young person.
