Extra care on roads urged as freezing temperatures expected

Councillor Patrick Allen encourages drivers make important checks before setting out on the road and to drive carefully in cold conditions.

With freezing temperatures and potential snow showers expected, Staffordshire County Council’s fleet of 37 gritters will be making their rounds across the county and drivers are being asked to do their bit, too.

People should drive to the conditions, plan their journeys and ensure their vehicles are well prepared.  When on the road in snowy or icy conditions, drivers should slow down and allow plenty of space between themselves and the vehicles in front of them. People should also allow extra time for their journey and even on gritted routes, care should still be taken as the grit needs traffic passing over it to make it work.

Patrick Allen, Cabinet Support Member for Highways North at Staffordshire County Council, said:

“Our gritting crews are well prepared for the wintery weather but we’re reminding drivers that they have an important role to play, as well.

“People should make sure their vehicles are in a safe condition.  Simple checks of tyres, lights and wipers to make sure they are working properly can make a big difference.

“Before setting out, always check the latest weather forecast, plan your journey, and take a warm coat, water and essential supplies in case of emergencies.  Being prepared, slowing down and taking extra care  means we can all get through the winter safely.”

Some things motorists can do before getting behind the wheel:

• Check tyres are at the correct pressures and there is sufficient tread. A minimum of 4mm is recommended for snow.
• Make sure vehicle lights are clean and working and check the battery is in good condition and fully charged.
• Check windscreen wipers are effective, the washer reservoir is full and check windows and mirrors are clear of ice or condensation.
