County council unveils new strategy to make communities safer and stronger

Tony Screen - Cabinet Member for Community Safety

Staffordshire County Council has unveiled its Community Safety Strategy for 2026–2029.

The strategy is a practical plan help protect vulnerable people and give residents a bigger role in shaping safer neighbourhoods.

It focuses on prevention, protection and partnership, with clear actions to tackle anti-social behaviour, support those most at risk, and stop problems before they start.

The strategy sets out four priorities:

  • Protecting vulnerable people –protecting those most at risk through targeted practical interventions that make a real difference.
  • Safer and stronger places – making Staffordshire’s neighbourhoods safe, strong and proud.
  • Prevention - preventing harm before it occurs by addressing the root causes of crime and vulnerability.
  • Effective partnerships – driving community safety through partnership, challenge and accountability.

Anthony Screen, Staffordshire County Council Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Resilience said: “Safety should not be a privilege, it should be a guarantee. Our commitment is to create a Staffordshire where every individual feels secure, supported, and free from fear. This strategy is not just a document, it sets out a clear vision and actions: to prevent harm before it happens, to work in partnership across communities, and to take decisive action when needed.

“Community safety is fundamental to wellbeing, economic growth, and public confidence. Without safe communities, everything else we strive for becomes harder to achieve.

“Together, we will tackle the root causes of crime and anti-social behaviour, protect the most vulnerable, and build stronger, more resilient neighbourhoods. By investing in prevention and fostering collaboration, we aim to make Staffordshire a place where safety is woven into the fabric of everyday life.”

The plans were discussed at a meeting of Staffordshire County Council’s safeguarding scrutiny committee on 22 January, and will now go before the county council’s cabinet in February.
