Councillor Andrew Mynors said it is "encouraging that we have a scheme in the final stages of design which should resolve" the long-standing flooding issue.
Staffordshire County Council is finalising the design of a drainage improvement scheme to resolve a long-standing flooding problem on a road in Newcastle.
The scheme, at Chemical Lane, Longbridge Hayes, will include the installation of a new drainage system to take surface water from the road near to the double bend, which is prone to flooding, to an existing drain to the south.
The scheme has been designed in partnership with Network Rail and Severn Trent Water. Work is expected to start in May 2026 and take around three months to complete. The temporary pumping equipment to remove any excess water from the road will remain in place until the scheme is completed.
Andrew Mynors, Cabinet Member for Connectivity at Staffordshire County Council, said:
“This flooding issue has been complex and long standing and it’s encouraging that we have a scheme in the final stages of design which should resolve it.
“The design that the engineers have come up with involves a new drainage system that will help take any excess water from the road down to an outflow about 220 meters away. It’s been a challenging issue but our engineers continue to work with their colleagues at Network Rail and Severen Trent Water.
“Once the scheme is complete, we will also be increasing maintenance of the new system to make sure it continues to adequately drain surface water from the road.”
