Highways crews cleared scores of fallen trees including this one at Sugar Loaf Lane, Iverly.
Staffordshire County Council’s highways crews dealt with more than twice the usual number of call-outs due to Storm Claudia.
From Friday morning, through to early on Sunday 16th, the crews received more than 220 notifications, of which 131 were classed as an emergency.
Most of those emergencies involved fallen trees blocking, or partially blocking, roads.
Darryl Eyers, Staffordshire County Council’s Deputy Chief Executive, was in charge at the weekend. He said:
Our highways crews worked all day Friday, through Friday night and then continued over the weekend tackling multiple problems.
They did a great job in the worst of the weather to keep Staffordshire moving and I’d like to thank them for their sustained effort.”
He added:
The main issues were fallen trees and some roads flooded by waterways bursting their banks, or rainfall running off fields.
The worst of the storm damage was resolved by Saturday afternoon, but we continued into Sunday working with partners to monitor rising river levels and to check on vulnerable residents who might be at risk, or who had been without power for a long period.”
With cold weather forecast later in the week motorists are always advised to respect sudden changes in the weather and drive accordingly.
