Safety improvements have been completed at the Draycott Cross Road junction in Cheadle.

A crossroad in Cheadle has been changed from a ‘give way’ to a ‘stop’ junction after safety concerns were raised by the local community.

A Staffordshire County Council highways scheme to carry out road repairs and improve safety at the Draycott Cross Road junction with the A521 Delphouse Road completed on Friday 21 November.

The work, which took five days to complete, saw crews patching up potholes and carrying out repairs to footways and kerbs. They also used jets to clear out all the drains in the area to help prevent flooding in the area when the winter weather hits.

The previously ‘give way’ junction was also changed to a ‘stop’ junction, with new 'stop' signs and ‘advance warning signs’ installed and road markings updated.

It is hoped that these improvements will make the junction safer and give reassurance to the local community.

Patrick Allen, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Support Member for Highways North, said:

“Residents raised concerns about safety at this junction and we listened. These improvements are designed to make the area safer for everyone who uses it and I hope the local community feels reassured that road safety is always our top priority.

“Everyone has a part to play, and I would urge drivers to pay close attention to signs, slow down when approaching junctions, and drive according to the conditions.”

As a separate phase of work planned for next year, the county council is also looking into reducing the speed limit to 30mph on both Brookhouse Road and Draycott Cross Road and extend the existing 30mph limit on the A521 Delphouse Road further west.

On all three roads, the council hopes to add 40mph buffer zones between 30mph areas and national speed limit sections to help improve safety.

Any changes to speed limits will require a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO), which involves a formal consultation process before any decision can be made.

Patrick added:

“We want to go further by reducing speeds in the wider area and introducing buffer zones so drivers naturally slow down before reaching the junction. This requires a Traffic Regulation Order and public consultation, which will take some time, but we’ll share updates as soon as we can.”
