Long-term transport vision puts community needs and choice first

A long-term plan has been updated to reflect Staffordshire’s latest transport priorities and put community needs and choice first.

Staffordshire County Council’s new Local Transport Plan (LTP) aims to ensure that every resident can choose the most suitable way to travel – or, where possible, benefit from digital connectivity as an alternative to making a journey.

The evidence-based plan takes in feedback from a public consultation last month and is designed to deliver a transport system that is efficient, reliable, and fit for the future. The plan replaces the previous version from 2011 and reflects the aspirations of Staffordshire’s communities.

It will guide how the county council invests in roads, public transport, and digital infrastructure, helping to secure national funding and shape future priorities for the county. The main aim is to have an integrated and efficient transport system that supports economic growth, creates healthy and safe communities, and improves the environment.

The LTP covers a wide range of themes that matter to local people. These include:

  • Improved, reliable and accessible public transport
  • A safe, well-maintained and reliable road network
  • Making walking and cycling safer, inclusive and more convenient with more use of our leisure routes
  • Creating well-connected and vibrant town centres
  • Improved transport planning, especially when linked to new developments

In addition, the plan recognises that not all journeys are necessary and so promotes digital solutions that allow residents to access services and opportunities without having to travel. Improved digital connectivity will also help the county council manage and operate the transport network more efficiently.

Included in the plan is a five-year investment ask of around £1 billion, levering in Government funding and private investment together with asks of partners and commitments from the county council.

Andrew Mynors, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for connectivity, said:

Staffordshire’s new Local Transport Plan sets out our long-term vision and immediate priorities. This covers the comprehensive transport needs across the county and the strategies to meet them.

At its heart is transport choice – options that are cost efficient, effective, and reliable for everyone. Whether it’s public transport, active travel, or digital connectivity, we want to ensure our communities can easily access what they need in the way that suits them best.”

The LTP will be discussed by members of the Economy, Infrastructure and Communities Overview and Scrutiny Committee at their meeting on Monday 17 November.
