Know your consumer rights ahead of Black Friday shopping sprees

Posted on Friday 21st November 2025
Tony Screen - Cabinet Member for Community Safety

Councillor Anthony Screen urges people to keep vigilant and know their rights.

Shoppers in Staffordshire are being encouraged to get to know their consumer rights ahead of Black Friday on 28 November.

With the usual bounty of deals on offer during one of the biggest retail events in the calendar, Trading Standards officers are reminding people and businesses of the importance of knowing their rights and obligations when buying goods.

Officers are offering shoppers their top tips, including using reputable businesses, retaining receipts and raising issues with retailers as soon as possible.  People should also remain calm and polite with retailers and speak to specialist Citizens Advice consumer advisors free of charge should anyone be uncertain about where they stand.

People are also being warned not to get carried away by the hype of big sales events.  While these events can offer genuine bargains, especially on clearance stock, they’re also prime opportunities for scammers to exploit the frenzy.  Shoppers should remain vigilant especially when shopping online.

Anthony Screen, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Resilience at Staffordshire County Council, said:

“Black Friday is a fantastic opportunity to snatch some great deals, but it’s important to be aware of potential scams and to know your consumer rights.

“You are legally entitled to receive goods as described, free from defects and fit for purpose. You are owed a refund, repair or replacement if this does not happen. Anyone having issues with a retailer or business should get in touch with Citizens Advice, who will provide guidance on the most appropriate course of action.

"Stay sharp and remember: if a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.”

Further information on consumer rights, along with advice for shoppers and businesses, is available on the Citizens Advice consumer service webpage or by contacting them on 0800 144 8848.
