Come along to the guided birdwatch walks at Cannock Chase to spot the beautiful birds migrating here for the winter.
Avid birch watchers are being invited to along to guided birdwatch walks at Cannock Chase this November, offering the perfect chance to spot some of the beautiful migratory birds arriving for the winter months.
The walks, hosted by Staffordshire County Council’s countryside rangers, will take place on Thursday 27 November and Saturday 29 November at Cannock Chase Country Park. They will last from 10am to 12pm, with tickets costing £5 per person.
Late autumn is a special time on the Chase, as several species of thrushes and finches make their journey south from colder northern countries to spend the winter in Britain’s milder climate.
Cannock Chase is a favourite stop for Redwings and Fieldfares - two seasonal visitors that rely on the area’s berry-rich shrubs for food.
Redwings can often be identified by their bright eye stripe and thin, high-pitched call, while Fieldfares announce themselves with a distinctive “check-chack” as they fly in large flocks across open woodland.
Higher in the canopy, Siskins and Redpolls can also be seen. They are easily recognised by their lively movements and fondness for feeding on the seeds in larch, birch and alder trees.
With so much wildlife relying on the Chase at this time of year, the county council is reminding visitors to help protect sensitive habitats by sticking to the established paths and keeping dogs on leads, particularly in areas where birds may be feeding or roosting.
After a peaceful walk, visitors are encouraged to stop by the Marquis Drive Visitor Centre, where they can warm up and learn more about local wildlife.
Hayley Coles, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, said:
“Winter brings some beautiful birds to Cannock Chase and these guided walks are a great way for people to enjoy the season while learning more about the wildlife that makes the area so special.
“Why not warm up with a hot drink at the Marquis Drive Visitor Centre after your peaceful walk? Our staff will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the birds you’ve seen and what else to look out for.”
Hayley added:
“We want everyone to have a wonderful experience, but also a responsible one. By keeping to paths, watching wildlife from a distance and keeping dogs on leads, together we can protect the habitats these birds depend on.”
