Staffordshire residents are being invited to take part in a series of free tree giveaway events to enrich their gardens and community spaces this autumn and winter.
The initiative encourages people to plant trees in their own gardens or, where appropriate permissions are in place, on private land through local community groups.
It’s organised by the Staffordshire Sustainability Board, which brings together elected members from councils in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent to allow discussion on the relevant environmental sustainability issues and collective projects.
The trees, a mix of oak, hawthorn, rowan, hazel, silver birch, crab apple and whitebeam, will be available to pick up from the following locations from 10am to 2pm.
- South Staffordshire – 27 October, Baggeridge Country Park, DY3 4HB
- Lichfield – 28 October, Chasewater Country Park, WS8 7NL
- Tamworth – 29 October, Tamworth Castle Grounds, B79 7NA
- Cannock – 30 October, Marquis Drive, WS12 4PW
- Stafford – 31 October, Albert’s Café, ST16 2QP
- Newcastle-under-Lyme – 21 November, Apedale Country Park, ST5 6AX
- East Staffordshire – 16 February, The Greenhouse at Stapenhill Cemetery, DE15 9AE
- Staffordshire Moorlands – 17 February, Deep Hayes Country Park, ST13 7JS
- Stoke-on-Trent – 18 February, Westport Lake, ST6 4RZ
Nigel Yates, chair of the Staffordshire Sustainability Board and cabinet member for climate change and environment at Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, said:
These events are about giving residents the opportunity to make a positive contribution to their local environment. Planting a tree is a simple but meaningful act that benefits communities and wildlife alike.”
Andrew Mynors, vice chair of the board and cabinet member for connectivity at Staffordshire County Council, added:
We’re proud to be working together across Staffordshire to support residents in taking practical steps to improve their surroundings. These events are a great opportunity for communities to get involved and help protect and enhance nature.”
Rangers and officers will be there to offer advice on how to plant your tree. No booking is required, but trees will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
