Four-way traffic lights could be introduced at a busy crossroads in Burton, to improve road safety and keep traffic flowing.
Staffordshire County Council is looking to introduce the scheme at the junction of Henhurst Hill, Postern Road, and Hopley Road in Burton upon Trent.
The scheme, developed in response to feedback from local residents, will use the latest ‘vehicle-actuated’ technology (MOVA) to ensure signals only turn green when needed, reducing unnecessary delays and adapting to real-time traffic conditions.
Added to this, the speed limit on Burton Road will be reduced, with a new 30mph zone and a 40mph buffer to encourage safer driving and address concerns about speeding.
Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways said:
“We’re committed to making our roads safer and more efficient for everyone. This scheme is a direct response to the concerns of residents and local businesses, and we’ll continue to work closely with the community to monitor its impact.
“This is a notorious spot, and as a local person I know the issues that this area has had with the crossroads so the addition of controlled traffic signals will be welcomed.
“We have also listened to the concerns of some businesses regarding traffic flow at peak times, and if any adjustments are needed, the system is flexible enough to respond. The proposed scheme, with its supporting measures, represents a balanced solution which addresses safety concerns and manages traffic effectively across all arms of the junction.”
If approved, the scheme will be implemented in Spring 2026.
