Nicholas Lakin - Cabinet Member for Children and Young People

Nick Lakin encourages people to consider adoption, calling it "one of the most rewarding things" some families have done.

Staffordshire families interested in providing a loving home for children awaiting adoption are being invited to find out more in a national campaign.

Starting on Monday 20 October, National Adoption Week will highlight the benefits of adoption, dispel myths about who can adopt and encourage people to learn more about the difference that adopting can make.

Adopters provide the lifelong, loving and stable family that local children need and deserve and in Staffordshire more adoption families are needed.

Aaron, a local adopter, said:

“The best thing about adopting has been just completing our family. We feel like we have always been a family and feel like our children have always been with us. Being able to share our lives together is just wonderful and every day is a new adventure.”

Staffordshire is part of regional adoption agency Together4Children, who provide people interested in adoption with the information, support and training from the very first step and throughout their journey.  A free online information event On Tuesday 4 November from 6pm to 7pm will give people the chance to find out more.

Research shows that many people believe they must wait to be in a ‘perfect situation’ to adopt, but Together4Children are keen to point out that the most important thing is being able to offer children a positive and nurturing home.

Nick Lakin, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People at Staffordshire County Council, said:

“We want every child in Staffordshire to grow up in a loving home and have the best possible start in life.  For some of our children in care, when they cannot stay with their birth families, adoption is the most appropriate way to help them achieve their full potential.

“Adopting children is a life changing experience and lots of our families tell us it’s one of the most rewarding things they have done.  We know that there are many people who would make fantastic adopters, but may feel unsure about coming forward. We would encourage anyone considering adoption to get in touch with the team.”

Together4Children is a partnership between Staffordshire County Council, Shropshire Council, Stoke-on-Trent City Council and Telford and Wrekin Council. Bookings for the online information event can be made on the Together4Children website. The team can also be contacted by phone on 0300 111 8044.
