A school crossing patrol warden who suffered a massive heart attack while waiting for fish and chips says he “…couldn’t wait to get back on the job.”
Graham Scott, 81, from Newcastle-under-Lyme, has been a school crossing patrol for Staffordshire County Council for 24 years. He currently works at Hempstalls Primary School in Newcastle.
He suffered a major cardiac arrest at the start of this year, while waiting in the queue for his favourite dinner of fish and chips.
Fortunately, a nurse who was also in the queue was able to perform CPR and use a local defibrillator to save his life.
After a period of rest and recovery, Graham was determined to get back out at his school crossing, something he did every day come rain or shine before his health issue.
Graham said:
“I absolutely love my job, so it was always my goal to get back on the crossing. My family suggested retirement, but I didn’t want to just sit in my house watching the hours go by, I really wanted to be active and keep living.
“I love the fresh air and talking to the children and parents. The school has welcomed me back with open arms—it’s a big part of my life, and I couldn’t wait to get back on the job as soon as I was better.
“Going back on the crossing is like a medicine. In fact, it’s better than medication!”
Hempstalls Primary School headteacher Amy Bell said:
“The whole Hempstalls community is delighted to see our much-loved lollipop man, Graham, back at his post. After being very poorly, Graham has shown incredible strength and resilience, bouncing back with his trademark smile and kind words for everyone he meets.
“Graham is more than just a familiar face on the crossing – he is an important part of Team Hempstalls. His dedication gives him real purpose and brings joy to our children, parents, and staff alike. Everyone loves him, and his presence makes the school run brighter and safer every day.”
Andrew Mynors, Staffordshire County Council Cabinet Member for Connectivity said:
“Graham is an absolute trooper, and I’m sure Hempstalls are delighted to have him back again. It’s clear the school and local community think the world of him.
“We have many school crossing patrols across the county that go above and beyond every day to ensure children cross the road safely. Graham is a shining example of this, and I hope he continues to recover well.”
