Councillor Patrick Allen says getting the work done as quickly as possible is a priority.
Crews working on a major highways improvement scheme at Wetley Rocks will be starting the resurfacing phase of the project on Monday 15 September.
The £1.4 million scheme is being delivered by Staffordshire County Council and includes improvements to the A520 main road through Wetley Rocks, from the vicinity of Oakland Close to the Texaco Petrol Station north of the village.
This next phase of the project will see the laying of the surface course for the carriageway from the Texaco petrol station up to the Plough Bank junction. Crews hope to have this part of the work completed by Friday 26 September and a signed diversion will be in place during the closures via the A52 and A523 roads.
A change to the works programme now means that the section from the Plough Bank junction to the 30mph gateway outside of Spring Cottage will be completed at a later date. This is due to a problem with Openreach cables, which are too close to the road surface and need to be moved and buried deeper under the road.
Patrick Allen, Cabinet Support Member for Highways North at Staffordshire County Council, said:
“Works are progressing well on this important scheme in the Staffordshire Moorlands. It’s one of many schemes taking place across the county and part of wider investment to improve roads right across Staffordshire.
“Having been to the site on a number of occasions and spoken to the crews, I know their priority is to get the work done as quickly as possible. They’ve also been keen to keep residents informed of any changes to the works and it’s good to hear the positive feedback from the local community.
“It’s unfortunate that we’ve had to postpone some of the resurfacing but once Openreach have fixed the problem with the substandard depth of the cables, crews will be able to resurface the final section. Once again, we thank people for their co-operation throughout the scheme.”
As well as the road improvements, crews are also resurfacing footpaths to improve accessibility for pedestrians and fixing damaged drainage, kerbs and ironworks where necessary.
