New cycleway in Burton nears completion

Shobnall cycleway progress NEWSROOM

The Shobnall Road shared footpath and cycleway in Burton is on track for completion at the start of next week.

Roadworks to deliver a new shared footpath and cycleway in Burton are set to finish at the start of next week.

Over the last couple of months, Staffordshire County Council’s highways crews have been installing a new shared footpath and cycleway on Shobnall Road to bridge the gap in the National Cycle Network 54 between the A38 overpass and Shobnall Leisure Complex.

This £300,000 scheme also includes a new parallel crossing as well as upgrades to two bus stops, traffic signs and road markings.

The project was originally scheduled for completion on Monday 1 September. However, heavy rainfall delayed the final stages of the scheme and further hidden defects were uncovered on approach to the new crossing, requiring more complex repairs.

To minimise further disruption, crews will be working under two-way traffic lights over the weekend to complete the remaining kerbing and footway works.

Road markings will then be applied on the morning of Monday 8 September, with all roadworks and traffic management removed later that afternoon.

For everyone's safety, the new crossing cannot be brought into use until the additional repair works are complete. They will be programmed for the coming months, timed to avoid the busiest periods on the road network.

In the meantime, temporary emergency repairs have been put in place and will be closely monitored by our crews. Barriers and signs will also be erected at the crossing to let road users know that it is not yet operational.

Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said:

“We carefully planned this scheme to follow on from the Branston Bridge works and to take place during the school holidays to keep disruption to a minimum. However, as with any major roadworks, sometimes unforeseen issues come to light once excavation begins and poor weather can add to the challenge.

“Despite this, our crews are pulling out all the stops and working over the weekend to get the scheme completed quickly, so we don’t overload the local network with extended closures. We’ll return in the coming months to finish the more complex repairs needed to bring the new crossing safely into use.”
