Staffordshire County Council has commissioned an independent review of its flagship place marketing initiative, We Are Staffordshire, marking a pivotal moment in the brand’s evolution.

The review, led by branding consultancy Instid, will assess the programme’s impact, governance and funding model, and deliver a refreshed strategy to guide its growth from 2026 to 2030.

Businesses across Staffordshire are being asked to complete the Independent Review survey, which is live until 5pm on 26 September.

Launched in 2021 following recommendations from marketing specialists thinkingplace, We Are Staffordshire has become a nationally recognised model for place promotion - engaging businesses, cultural institutions and local authorities to raise the county’s profile.

The initiative has delivered significant achievements, including a diversified funding model, the launch of Staffordshire’s first Film Office, Screen Staffordshire and hosting the prestigious City Nation Place UK 2024 conference in Lichfield.

Martin Murray, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economy and Skills, said:

"We Are Staffordshire has made good traction with stakeholders and the business community across the county but we want it to have greater reach and impact, including our profile in the media.

“This review is a timely opportunity to ensure the brand continues to deliver impact and aligns with our wider ambitions for economic growth as we position Staffordshire as the beating heart of the country."

The review will explore how We Are Staffordshire can continue to support economic growth, attract investment and enhance civic pride, while responding to external challenges such as local government reorganisation and devolution. Ambassadors, new and less engaged businesses and local authority partners are invited to contribute insights and ideas to shape the future direction of the brand.

Hannah Ault DL, Chair of the We Are Staffordshire Place Board, added:

"Staffordshire truly is a place to celebrate. This review allows us to reflect on our achievements and set a bold new direction for the future. We’re proud of the partnerships we’ve built and the energy behind our brand."

With over £290,000 in combined public and private sector funding, and a growing network of ambassadors and partners, We Are Staffordshire is poised to enter its next phase with renewed clarity, ambition and impact.
