Works to the A523 in Leek

Posted on Tuesday 12th August 2025
Peter Mason NEWSROOM

A major route in Leek is under temporary traffic lights, as highway crews investigate a gap under the road surface.

The A523 in Leek, at the junction of Abbey Green Road, will be under lights as crews investigate the cause of the void, and see what remedial action needs to be taken.

Crews will be digging down and excavating the site to try and find the cause of the issue, with the results of this work informing how teams tackle the issue.

Teams are doing their best to keep the road open under traffic signals and only utilise a closure on Abbey Green Road. However, depending on what is found after excavation starts, a full road closure may be needed in the future.

Any diversions will be clearly signposted.

Crews will do their best to minimise disruption while they investigate, but due to the nature of the issue and the location, people are being asked to allow more time for their journeys.

Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways said:

“Our crews were alerted to reports of a gap under the road surface on the A523 and have had to take emergency steps to make the area safe while they can investigate the issue.

“These sorts of issues can be quite complex, so we need to thoroughly investigate before we can take steps to rectify the issue. We will do our best to avoid a full road closure, but this could be a possibility in future depending on the extent of the issue.

“Even so, this is a major route in Leek, so some disruption will be inevitable. We’d ask people to bear with us while we carry out this investigation and subsequent works.”
