Works to resurface the Derby Turn roundabout in Burton are making good progress.
A major highways scheme to reconstruct a busy roundabout in Burton has passed the halfway mark.
Staffordshire County Council’s highways crews are currently rebuilding the A5121 Derby Turn roundabout and its approach from the A511 Horninglow Road.
Over the last two weeks, crews have been removing the road’s existing ironwork and carrying our repairs to drains, kerbs and guard rails.
From today (Thursday 28 August), the team will begin removing the worn carriageway and laying the new surface on the road. This will be done under daytime road closures with clear diversion routes in place.
Whilst resurfacing takes place, an additional crew will be widening the footpaths and making improvements to pedestrian routes and crossing points on behalf of the county council’s Integrated Transport Team.
This reflects the geographical approach the county council plans to take with highways works going forward. By tackling multiple highways defects in one go, this will help to keep costs down and reduce the need for repeat visits, meaning less disruption for residents.
The £810,000 scheme to resurface Derby Road remains on track to complete by Friday 12 September.
The work carried out by the Integrated Transport Team will continue into the following week, but this will only require lane narrowing and not a road closure.
Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said:
“It’s great to see this important scheme progressing well and on schedule. Our crews have been working hard to keep the project moving. It was planned for the school summer holidays to help minimise disruption and I’m pleased that approach is paying off.
“This is a significant investment in Burton’s road network and, once complete, it will make a real difference for everyone who travels through the area. I want to thank everyone for their patience and look forward to seeing the new improved road reopen to traffic.”
The work is part of a wider £2.5 million county council investment in Burton to rebuild the route from the A38 Clay Mills junction to Derby Turn in four phases.
