Major highways improvements in Burton town centre completed

Burton completed improvements

The junction of Union Street, New Street and Orchard Street has received improvements

A major highways improvement scheme at two key town centre junctions in Burton has been completed on time and within budget.

The £600,000 scheme was delivered by Staffordshire County Council and took four weeks to complete.

Work included the resurfacing of the junction of Union Street, Orchard Street and New Street, as well as the New Street traffic island and the High Street and Manor Drive approaches.  Crews also replaced damaged ironworks and kerbs while on site.

During the scheme, the county council worked closely with East Staffordshire Borough Council to help minimise inconvenience to residents.   This included providing free parking to customers of Manor Drive’s new pub The Long Hop, which opened on Friday 1 August.  Free parking was also provided to customers of local businesses near Fleet Street Car Park to minimise disruption to trade.

Peter Mason, Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways at Staffordshire County Council, said:

“This is a vital improvement scheme for Burton and it’s great to see the work completed on schedule and on budget.

“Crews did a great job to get the work completed on time and did what was required to keep disruption to an absolute minimum. By working with our borough council colleagues and by providing free alternative parking, we were also able to make sure that businesses remained open.

“Thank you to everyone for their patience and co-operation while we completed these important works. I do hope everyone enjoys the rejuvenated roads in the town centre.”
