Work to reconstruct a roundabout in Burton is set to start next week, marking the next phase of a wider £2.5 million investment to upgrade one of the town’s key routes.
From Monday 11 August, Staffordshire County Council’s highways crews will begin resurfacing the A5121 Derby Turn roundabout and its approach from the A511 Horninglow Road.
This scheme will be completed throughout the school summer holidays to minimise disruption as much as possible.
All stages of the project will require daytime closures from Monday to Friday between the hours of 07:30 and 17:30 while crews carry out essential repairs to drains, kerbs, guard rails and ironworks.
Closures will be phased, and designated staff will be on site to help residents maintain access to their properties.
Carriageway reconstruction is scheduled to start on Thursday 28 August. Once complete, the team will clear gullies and apply fresh road markings.
This £810,000 scheme is expected to take one month to complete.
Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said:
“We know how important this route is for people travelling in and out of Burton every day, which is why we’re making this significant investment.
“By carrying out some of the most disruptive work in phased closures and maintaining access for residents where possible, we’re doing everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum while delivering long-term improvements.”
Originally planned for June, this phase was rescheduled to avoid adding pressure to local traffic while Branston Bridge was closed for repairs.
While work is also underway at the A444 Stanton Road roundabout as part of a separate highways scheme, both sets of improvements have been carefully coordinated to avoid any conflict. The two schemes are located far enough apart that their impact on each other’s traffic flows will be minimal.
The work is part of a wider £2.5 million county council investment in Burton to rebuild the route from the A38 Clay Mills junction to Derby Turn in four phases.
The first phase of the project was completed at the A38 Clay Mills in Autumn 2023, costing half a million pounds.
The second phase, costing £1.25 million, saw crews reconstruct and resurface the A5121 Derby Road from James Brindley Way to the Pirelli roundabout last year.
The final phase will see crews reconstruct the route between the Pirelli roundabout to Derby Turn. The details of this phase will be shared in the coming months.
