Further works required at Wetley Rocks improvements

Patrick Allen says that the extra works ensure less maintenance would be needed in future

Highways crews on a major scheme at Wetley Rocks will be carrying out additional road reconstruction work as part of the project.

The £1.4 million scheme is being delivered by Staffordshire County Council and includes the reconstruction and resurfacing of the A520 main road through Wetley Rocks.

Crews will now be excavating and resurfacing the road between the Mill Lane and Cheadle Road junctions at a greater depth than originally planned. The additional work comes after broken drains, several gaps under the road surface and poor-quality utility reinstatements were identified, which need to be fixed.

Crews will be working six days per week, Monday to Saturday from 7.30am to 4.30pm to get the additional work done as quickly as possible. To make sure works can be done safely, the A520 Main Road will also be closed from Wednesday 13 August for approximately three weeks. A signed diversion will be in place along the A522 Cheadle Road and A52 Kingsley Road.

Access to properties along the length of the scheme will be maintained throughout the works and crews will be doing their best to minimise disruption. People should allow extra time for their journeys.

Patrick Allen, Cabinet Support Member for Highways North at Staffordshire County Council, said:

“This is a major improvement scheme for the area and crews are working hard to get the work done as quickly as possible. It’s all part of our wider plans to improve roads right across Staffordshire.

“While work is progressing well on-site, engineers have identified some extra work which will need to be carried out. This mainly involves digging down deeper than we had originally planned as we found a number of unforeseen issues. This extra work will make sure the structure of the road is more solid, requiring less maintenance in the future.

“The safest and quickest way to get the job done is to close the road temporarily and we’d ask people to use the signed diversion in place. Crews will also be working six days a week to help speed things up and we thank people for their ongoing co-operation while we get this important scheme done.”

The scheme is taking place in the vicinity of Oakland Close up to the Texaco Petrol Station north of the village. In addition to the new road surface, some sections of footpaths will also be resurfaced to improve accessibility for pedestrians. Crews will also be fixing damaged drainage, kerbs and ironworks where necessary.
