St George's Park in Staffordshire
Staffordshire is backing the Lionesses as they prepare to face tournament favourites Spain in the final of the Women’s Euros on Sunday night.
Beating Italy in extra time in the semifinal clash on Tuesday night secured their place in the final.
The team’s long journey to the final began in Staffordshire itself from their training ground at St George’s Park, where preparations were made, skills honed and tactics agreed.
The county will be cheering on the team, including goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, one of the stars of the tournament, as they hope for a roaring success over the Spanish. Hannah attended Chase Grammar School in Cannock and Erasmus Darwin Academy in Burntwood.
Hayley Coles, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture at Staffordshire County Council, said:
“Our lionesses reaching the final once again in the Euros is such a brilliant achievement and we’re all so proud of them here in Staffordshire.
“Throughout the tournament, the team have fought hard and produced some truly remarkable moments. They continue to be incredible role models for young people which we hope will help inspire the next generation of super sports stars.
“The fact that the squad prepares for tournaments like this at St George’s Park, which also acts as an educational centre and tourist landmark, is something we’re immensely proud of. I do hope people will join me as we cheer them on to yet another Euros cup.”
The final takes place on Sunday 27 July at 5pm and can be watched on BBC One or ITV1.
