Safety improvements for families and cyclists in Burton

Shobnall Rd cycleway NEWSROOM

A new crossing and a shared footpath and cycleway is about to be installed on Shobnall Road in Burton.

Work starts this month to install a new crossing near a primary school in Burton, supporting safe and active travel for cyclists and families on the school run.

A new shared footpath and cycleway will be installed by Staffordshire County Council’s highways crews to bridge the gap in the National Cycle Network (NCN) 54 between the A38 overpass and Shobnall Leisure Complex on Shobnall Road.

This £300,000 six-week project will include a new parallel crossing to improve safety for children and families walking to and from Shobnall Nursery and Primary School.

There will additionally be upgrades to two bus stops, traffic signs and road markings.

Crews will begin working on the new footpath and cycleway under a full road closure between Hendeley Court and Union Way, on Saturday 19 July - just ahead of the summer holidays. At the same time, GTC will be carrying out gas works on Shobnall Road.

Combining these projects means preventing two separate road closures and reducing disruption as much as possible to the local community.

GTC will leave site on 8 August, whilst the county council's highways crews continue their works under four-way temporary traffic lights until 30 August.

There will then be a temporary road closure, between the A38 overbridge and Hendeley Court, on 31 August and 1 September so crews can complete road surfacing and add new road markings. A clearly signposted diversion route will be in place.

Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said:

“I’m pleased to see these vital safety improvements now moving forward. This project will make a real difference for families and children walking or cycling to school on what is a busy route into Burton.

“Although originally planned for February, we listened to residents’ concerns and chose to delay the scheme until Branston Bridge reopened. This was one of several roadworks that we postponed, while the bridge was undergoing repairs, to keep Burton moving and minimise inconvenience for local communities.

“With the bridge now fully open, we can focus on delivering more major road improvements for Burton. I’d like to thank local residents for their patience and reassure them that we are committed to coordinating works and keeping everyone informed throughout the process.”

This project is funded by the Department for Transport via Sustrans’ Paths for Everyone project.
