Resurfacing to start in Burton town centre next week

Posted on Thursday 10th July 2025
Union St Burton NEWSROOM

The Union Street junction in Burton will undergo resurfacing next week.

A highways project to improve two Burton town centre junctions is beginning next week.

This Staffordshire County Council scheme will see crews resurface the junction of Union Street, Orchard Street and New Street. Works will also include the New Street traffic island, along with the High Street and Manor Drive approaches.

Daytime work to repair kerbs, ironworks and footways will start on Monday 14 July under temporary traffic lights.

Overnight closures will then be in place from 21 July to 8 August, on Mondays through to Thursdays, so that crews can begin to resurface the roads with minimum disruption to the community.

A clearly signed diversion route will be in place during the closures, along with designated crew members at either end of the closure points to help with access to properties.

This project, costing around £600,000, is expected to take one month to complete.

Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said:

“Our highways crews are making the best of the summer weather to fix as many roads as possible. The Union Street and New Street crossroads are in poor condition and these repairs will give them a smoother road surface that should last for years to come.

“We understand this is a busy part of Burton so our crews will be carrying out these important carriageway reconstruction works overnight to minimise disruption to residents, businesses and bus services.

“In the meantime, please plan ahead and allow extra time for your journeys. We want to thank people for bearing with us while we complete these important works that will really make a difference to local people.”
