Staffordshire Highways crews will be carrying out overnight work underneath Branston Bridge, to repair the brick arches.
The work, which starts tomorrow (26 July) and will be carried out every Saturday night/into Sunday morning over seven weeks, will have no impact on road traffic or pedestrians, and the bridge will remain open throughout.
Crews will be repointing the inside of the brick arch from the railway tracks underneath, now that the structure has had an opportunity to dry out following the installation of the concrete saddle.
This is essential work to strengthen the mortar on the underside of the bridge. Works will only be taking place overnight as this gives crews the longest period of work without disrupting any train operations.
Each Saturday night, the work will start with installing scaffolding. Areas of degraded mortar will then be removed and replaced with new lime mortar before the scaffolding is removed before the end of the shift.
Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways said:
“It has been good to see Branston Bridge open and being used once more, but it’s an important reminder that our work still continues on site.
“Crews will be adding more strength to the bridge by repointing the brickwork, which involves removing degraded mortar and replacing it with new lime mortar. The operations might create some noise, but every effort will be made to keep this to a minimum to try and avoid disturbing residents.
“The bridge won’t be closed while this is being carried out, as crews will be working underneath the structure, and there will be no impact on road traffic or pedestrians. We’re doing this over Saturday nights as this gives us the longest window of time to take possession of the railway, before trains start again on Sunday.”
