New crossing set to improve safety in Staffordshire village
Posted on Thursday 31st July 2025
Work to install a new pedestrian crossing on a main village road near Newcastle-under-Lyme will begin on Monday 4 August.
The developer-funded scheme on the A53 Newcastle Road in Baldwins Gate will take four weeks to complete. It will see the new signal-controlled puffin crossing installed between the junctions of Sandyfields and Lakeside Close.
While work is carried out, temporary traffic signals will be in place, with four overnight closures needed for surfacing towards the end of the scheme. Dates and diversion routes will be publicised ahead of the closures.
Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for strategic highways, said:
The new crossing will improve pedestrian safety in Baldwins Gate across the busy A53. It’s entirely developer funded and will take a month to complete. Work is taking place during the school summer break to minimise disruption, though we’d ask people to allow additional travel time during this period.”
The scheme is part of the wider Bellway Homes development in the village.
