Planned highway improvements on Stafford Road and Stone Road in Uttoxeter have been postponed until two large sporting events have concluded.
The preventative maintenance treatment on the A518, B5027 and the A522 in the town are being delivered by Staffordshire County Council and were due to start on 21 July.
This work needs to be carried out in dry weather and with some rain forecast in the coming weeks there was a risk of the work not being completed ahead of the two events. The work is now scheduled to start on 28 July, after the LIV Golf Tournament at the JCB Golf and Country Club from 25 to 27 July and Ladies Day at Uttoxeter Racecourse on 25 July.
Both events are expected to see increased traffic on the roads, with an estimated 60,000 visitors for the LIV Golf Tournament over the three days. Anyone travelling on those days is being asked to plan their journeys and allow extra travelling time.
Patrick Allen, Cabinet Member for Highways North at Staffordshire County Council, said:
“These are important improvements for Uttoxeter but we’ve taken the decision to postpone them until after the LIV Golf Tournament and Ladies Day at Uttoxeter Racecourse. We did this just in case the works were delayed by the wet weather we’re expecting.
“Both these events are expected to be extremely well attended with thousands of visitors to the area and increased traffic on the network. We want to keep the roads as clear as we can and have pushed these works back to at least Monday 28 July.
“It’s great to have a major sporting event like LIV Golf taking place here in Staffordshire, attracting thousands of visitors to the area and showcasing the county to a global audience. In the run up to the event, we’ve been working closely with the event organisers to ensure visitor travel and access runs smoothly and that businesses and residents are aware of the arrangements.”
The surface dressing work planned for Uttoxeter is part of the council’s preventative treatment programme that helps preserve and extend the life of roads whilst they are still in good condition. Because of this work, the roads last longer and do not require as much maintenance in the future.
The work will also be staggered to help minimise disruption, ensuring that multiple roads are not closed at the same time. The roads will be closed for a total of two days each, first for an initial treatment and then again a few days later for sealing. While the roads are closed there will be signed diversions in place.
