More people across Staffordshire can now access free sanitary products at their local library, thanks to a scheme that helps people struggling financially.

Following a successful pilot, this Staffordshire County Council initiative has expanded to include Leek, Perton, Tamworth and Lichfield Libraries. This means that every district and borough in Staffordshire now offers free pads and tampons to those who need them.

The scheme is designed to support residents who may be struggling to afford essential items, helping to tackle period poverty and promote health, dignity and inclusion.

During the pilot, feedback from service users highlighted the scheme’s impact. One service user shared:

"I think it is a great scheme. I am 19 living on my own. My priorities are my meals and paying my bills, which I struggle to do. Anything I can get to support me is so helpful."

Products are available in discreet collection boxes, with no questions asked.

Over the next year, the county council expects to distribute more than 3,000 sanitary products through participating libraries. Donation bins are also in place for those who wish to support others in their community.

Hayley Coles, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, said:

“Access to sanitary products is a basic necessity, not a luxury.

“This initiative is about protecting people’s dignity and wellbeing. We’ve seen the difference it’s made already, and we’re proud to extend that support even further.

“It’s also heartening to see how many residents are donating to help others. It’s a real show of community spirit.”
