A new framework for residual waste disposal has been agreed at Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet meeting today (16 July).
The framework is designed to ensure the county council can still fulfil its waste disposal duties in the event of an outage at Hanford Energy Recovery Facility (ERF).
Although waste is collected by district and borough councils, the county council is the waste disposal authority. Residual waste - waste that can’t be recycled or reused - is usually sent to ERFs.
Developed in partnership with district and borough councils, the framework will ensure that alternative disposal points are available without impacting on collections.

"Ensuring we consistently meet our statutory duties for residual waste disposal is a key responsibility. This framework is an important contingency plan to ensure the council can fulfill its legal obligations for residual waste disposal, particularly for the four district and boroughs currently using Hanford ERF.
“The framework means that, in the event of a planned or unplanned outage at Hanford ERF, waste can still be collected and sent to compliant facilities for disposal, ensuring we can always fulfill our waste disposal obligations and contribute to a cleaner county.”
