Crews working at Wetley Rocks
Motorists are being advised of some additional repairs and investigative works required at a major highways scheme under way at Wetley Rocks.
The £1.4 million scheme started on 30 June and is being delivered by Staffordshire County Council.
During the works, crews have identified additional issues with the drainage systems which will need to be repaired. Further investigation has also revealed a number of gaps under the road surface which will require additional exploration and repair.
To make sure these repairs can be done safely, the A520 Main Road will be temporarily closed during the day from Monday 21 July for approximately two weeks. A clearly signposted diversion will be in place along the A522 Cheadle Road and A52 Kingsley Road.
Access to properties along the length of the scheme will be maintained throughout the works and crews will be doing their best to minimise disruption. People should allow extra time for their journeys.
Patrick Allen, Cabinet Support Member for Highways North at Staffordshire County Council, said:
“This is a major improvement scheme and is part of our wider plans to improve roads right across the county.
“With schemes of this size and scale, crews often discover unforeseen issues and extra work to be carried out. When the crews were digging up the road, they found several broken drains that will need replacing. They’ve also found some gaps under the surface of the road. We think these are likely to be from old utility trenches which have deteriorated over the years but they need to be fixed as a matter of urgency.
“To get this work done safely, the road will be temporarily closed for a couple of weeks and we’d ask people to use the diversion route in place. Once again, I’d like to thank people in advance for their patience.”
The scheme will include the reconstruction and resurfacing of the A520 main road through Wetley Rocks, in the vicinity of Oakland Close to the Texaco Petrol Station north of the village. Some sections of footpaths will also be resurfaced to improve accessibility for pedestrians. Crews will also be fixing damaged drainage, kerbs and ironworks where necessary.
