A £1.5 million project to reconstruct a key roundabout junction in Tamworth has now been completed.
This scheme, carried out by Staffordshire County Council’s highways crews, involved resurfacing sections of the Coleshill Street Island in Fazeley and its approaches, including Lichfield Street and Atherstone Street on the B5404.
The project was initially on track to complete last month but faced an unexpected delay following two separate incidents of threatening behaviour towards road workers. For the safety of all staff, work was temporarily paused while additional security measures were introduced.
Crews resumed work on Monday 30 June and completed the final phase over three consecutive nights.
This scheme had to be extended by one further evening due to high temperatures preventing the new surface from curing quickly enough to apply fresh road markings during the same shift.
Highways crews put in additional hours on Wednesday night and the full scheme was completed yesterday morning (Thursday 3 July).
Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said:
“It’s fantastic to see another significant highways project completed in Tamworth.
“Our teams worked tirelessly to deliver the improvements to a high standard, despite unacceptable incidents of abuse that forced a temporary pause in the work. We made the right call to prioritise the safety of our crews. No one should face threats while doing their job and such behaviour will not be tolerated.
“I’d like to thank residents and road users for their patience. Well-maintained roads are vital for local communities and the wider economy and I hope these improvements make a real difference for everyone in the area.”
Further carriageway reconstruction work on Coleshill Street is currently scheduled to take place in September. This will take place between the junction of New Street to 85 Coleshill Street.
Crews will also be resurfacing Atherstone Street from the pedestrian crossing to Tame Court.
Further details of these highways improvements – including timings and traffic management plans - will be shared in the coming months.
