Crews working on the Coleshill roundabout junction scheme were threatened last week resulting in the project being temporarily paused.
A £1.5 million project to reconstruct a key roundabout junction in Tamworth has been temporarily paused due to two incidents of threatening behaviour towards crews onsite.
Staffordshire County Council’s highways crews have spent the last month resurfacing sections of the Coleshill Street island in Fazeley and its approaches, including Lichfield Street and Atherstone Street on the B5404.
The overall scheme was initially on track to complete on Friday 20 June, but the project had to be put on pause last week after two incidents of threatening behaviour towards staff caused safety concerns.
Overnight work to resurface and add fresh road markings to the Coleshill Street Island, County Drive and Lichfield Street will recommence on Monday 30 June and take two days.
Road closures will be in place from 8pm to 6am. Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place and crews will be onsite to assist with access to properties within the closure points where safe to do so.
Daniel Cecil, Cabinet Support Member for Highways South at Staffordshire County Council, said:
“It is a shame that we had to pause the works on the Coleshill Street junction as our crews were making really good progress on the scheme and were on track to complete these improvements on time.
“No one deserves to be abused at work. The safety of our staff will always come first and any threatening behaviour shown towards them will not be tolerated.
“Work will recommence soon with additional security measures in place so crews can safely complete the remaining reconstruction works. I want to thank residents and local businesses for their patience and cooperation throughout the project.”
Further carriageway reconstruction work on Coleshill Street is currently scheduled to take place in September. This will take place between the junction of New Street to 85 Coleshill Street.
Crews will also be resurfacing Atherstone Street from the pedestrian crossing to Tame Court.
Further details of these highways improvements – including timings and traffic management plans - will be shared in the coming months.
