An £800,000 scheme to resurface a busy junction, install new traffic lights and upgrade pedestrian crossings in Lichfield is complete.

The improvements, carried out by Staffordshire County Council’s highways teams saw the resurfacing of Eastern Avenue from the junction of the A51 Stafford Road and the installation of new traffic lights at the junction with Grange Lane.  A new puffin crossing was also installed across Grange Lane and the existing puffin crossing on Eastern Avenue was also upgraded to a toucan crossing.  The new crossings will improve safety for pedestrians, allow bicycles to cross at the same time as pedestrians helping to boost accessibility and active travel across the city.

This major work is in addition to the £30 million investment in the county’s roads over the next two years.

David Williams, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at Staffordshire County Council said:

“This was an important scheme for the city and it’s great news that the work is complete.

“It’s one of many schemes we’ve completed recently to improve journeys for people across the county. And, as well as providing smoother journeys for drivers, we’ve also made it safer for people walking or cycling in the area.

“Encouraging more active travel remains a priority for the council and something we are keen to see more of.  We already know keeping active is important for our physical health, but it's also vital for mental health too.  We do hope the improvements here will help get more people outdoors either walking or cycling which will ultimately help improve people’s health and wellbeing.”

Funding for the scheme was secured from the HS2 road safety fund and a recently successful Department for Transport grant.
